What to wear to a rodeo: shirts, hats and boots for the stands
A rodeo outfit for the stands is jeans, a western shirt, boots that are comfortable for a lot of walking and a hat for the sun. A Cheyenne Frontier Days parade chairman calls boots, blue jeans, a Western shirt and a cowboy hat the authentic look, and recommends straw over felt in the heat. Comfort comes first.

Does a rodeo outfit need to look authentic?
No. Woody Acord, who chaired the Cheyenne Frontier Days concessions committee, told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle in 2023 that "authentic Western depends on how you grew up and what you were exposed to," and that visitors who are comfortable in what they wear will have a good time. His colleague Jim VanCise, the parades chairman, put it more bluntly: "I don't think anybody is going to put their nose up in the air at any patron, regardless of how they're dressed."
Dressing Western for the rodeo is still common, and some events encourage it. Houston's first-timer guide ends with "don't forget to wear your Western best!" The New York Times obituary of Jack A. Weil credits him with persuading Cheyenne's Chamber of Commerce that everyone should dress Western for Frontier Days.
What helps in the heat?
Start with the hat. VanCise said "felt hats are very hot" and that "the white straw hats are the coolest, especially if you get one that has a lot of airflow on the sides." Tourism Calgary adds that a hat shields the eyes and face from the sun.
For the shirt, a performance fabric helps on a summer afternoon. The two hot-day picks above list UPF ratings and vented yokes, and long-sleeve versions exist for anyone who prefers covered arms.
