Western shirt brands: who makes what, from Wrangler to Rockmount

The best-known western shirt brands split into old shirt makers and newer ones that started with boots. Rockmount, Panhandle Slim and H Bar C go back to the 1930s and '40s. Wrangler is the big work-shirt name. Stetson shirts are made under license. Ariat, Tecovas and Cinch came later, from boots or rodeo.

How these were chosen

Every pick on this site starts from the product page: fiber, yoke, pockets, closure and the size chart. Commission plays no part in that pass. The longer version is on how we pick.

How do the big western shirt brands differ?

By age and by what they sold first. Three of the eight on this page started as shirt or clothing makers before 1950: Rockmount and Panhandle Slim in 1946, and H Bar C, which says it began as a Brooklyn tailor in 1897. Stetson started with hats in 1865. Ariat and Tecovas started with boots, and Cinch says it was born from the rodeo arena in 1996.

Who makes Wrangler western shirts?

Wrangler is part of Kontoor Brands, which also owns Lee and says Wrangler "has been an icon in authentic American style for 75 years." Its Cowboy Cut work shirts carry the full set of details: spade flap snap pockets, front and back yokes, a pencil slot and three-snap cuffs. The brand's name is also on a rodeo: the event's official site calls it the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. For "wrangler pearl snap" shoppers, the Wrangler card above links to the whole snap-shirt category.

Why does Rockmount come up so often?

Rockmount's founder, Jack A. Weil, is the person the New York Times calls "almost certainly the first to put snaps on Western shirts." The company opened in Denver in 1946 and still sells the sawtooth pocket and diamond snap design it calls its signature. The Times also noted that Weil kept making shirts in America long after competitors moved overseas. Today some Rockmount shirts are labeled Made in USA and others imported, so the listing is worth reading. The pearl snap guide has the full snap story.

Who makes Stetson shirts?

Karman Inc. in Denver makes Stetson apparel under license, according to a Denver Post feature reprinted on Rockmount's site. Stetson itself dates to 1865 and is best known for hats. The shirts list their fit by name, Tailored or Classic, and the how to wear guide explains what that means for tucking.

What about Ariat, Tecovas and Cinch?

All three came to shirts from somewhere else. Ariat was founded as "The New Breed of Boot" and says its company values have guided it since 1993. Tecovas began in 2015, when Paul Hedrick started selling boots, and it says every product is still designed in Austin. Cinch traces its heritage to 1918 and a salesman named Phillip Miller, and says the brand itself launched in 1996 as part of Miller International. Cinch and H Bar C shirts on this site link to Pinto Ranch, a western retailer that carries both.

Who really made the first pearl snap shirt?

Two companies founded in 1946 both lay claim to it. Panhandle Slim calls itself "the creator of the pearl snap shirt" on its about page. The New York Times gives the credit to Rockmount's Jack A. Weil, with the hedge "almost certainly," and a 2016 Cowboys & Indians history of Panhandle also credits Weil with putting snaps on shirts. Panhandle's own first western shirt, The Gambler, arrived around 1948 or 1949, per that same history. The vintage guide covers dating older shirts from either maker, and individual picks are on best western shirts.
