How to wear a western shirt: tucked, untucked or layered

A western shirt is worn like any collared shirt, and the cut decides whether it tucks. Longer hems, like Stetson's Classic Fit, are made to stay tucked into jeans. Shorter cuts, like its Tailored Fit, are made for tucked or untucked. A denim western shirt also works open over a T-shirt, and a plain white one under a jacket.

What to skip

Do

  • Check the fit name on the listing before deciding to tuck or not.
  • Roll the sleeves on a hot day. Snap cuffs open fast.
  • Mix one western piece with plain basics.

Skip

  • Don't wear a long riding tail untucked if it hangs past the seat.
  • Don't pile on every western piece at once unless the event calls for it.

What keeps a western shirt from looking like a costume?

By treating it as a regular shirt and keeping the rest of the outfit plain. Steve Weil, who took over the creative side of Rockmount, told Cowboys & Indians that the biggest difference with earlier western styles is that "they were more of a costume." His own direction, he said, "was aimed at lifestyle," which he described as "clothing one is comfortable wearing day to day, but ranging from casual to dressy."

Stetson's apparel side reports something similar for its women's line. A merchandising executive told the Denver Post, in a feature Rockmount reprinted, that the women's customer is not as likely as the men's to wear Western from head to toe. One western shirt with jeans and plain shoes reads as clothing, and the hat and boots can join when the setting suits them, as at a rodeo.

Which shirts are cut to tuck?

The fit name and the hem length on the listing tell most of the story.

Stetson spells it out better than most. Its Classic Fit has "a longer hem designed to stay tucked in while riding," and its Tailored Fit is "slightly tapered at the sides" with "a shorter length designed to look great tucked or untucked." Ariat's Chester is its "most generous fit, with extra length in the body and sleeves." The long riding tail goes back a long way: Cowboys & Indians says Panhandle's first western shirt, The Gambler, from around 1948 or 1949, had "a long tail that would stay tucked in while the rider was mounted."

Shirts sorted by fit and fabric are on best western shirts, pearl snaps specifically on best pearl snap shirts, and the snap itself is explained on the pearl snap guide.

Questions people ask

Should a western shirt be tucked in?

It depends on the cut. Stetson describes its Classic Fit as having "a longer hem designed to stay tucked in while riding" and its Tailored Fit as "a shorter length designed to look great tucked or untucked." The listing usually says which.

What keeps a pearl snap shirt from looking like a costume?

Treat it as an everyday shirt and skip head-to-toe theme dressing. Steve Weil of Rockmount said earlier western styles were "more of a costume" and that his aim was clothing comfortable day to day, from casual to dressy.

Can a western shirt be worn untucked?

Yes, if the hem is cut for it. Stetson's Tailored Fit is shorter for that reason. Long riding tails, like the one Panhandle put on its 1940s Gambler shirt, are made to stay tucked.

Can a western shirt be worn open?

Denim and chambray western shirts work open over a T-shirt as a light layer. Tourism Calgary calls denim shirts versatile layering pieces.

Can the sleeves on a snap shirt be rolled?

Yes. Ariat says the double-snap cuffs on its Chester shirt make rolling up the sleeves quick. Even pro rodeo rules let bareback and bull riders roll the riding-arm sleeve to the elbow.
