Cowboy shirt vs western shirt: what each term means
Western shirt is the clothing-trade name for a shirt with a shaped shoulder yoke. Pointed flap pockets usually come with it, and the front closes with snaps or buttons. Cowboy shirt is the name most shoppers type for that same garment. On current retail sites the two labels cover one pattern.

What a western shirt is
In the clothing trade, a western shirt means a shirt with a shaped shoulder yoke. Pointed flap pockets are part of that pattern on most current listings. The front closes with a snap or a button.
What cowboy shirt adds
Cowboy shirt is the phrase most shoppers type. Retail titles mix the two labels on the same kind of shirt. Wrangler's category is "Men's Western Snap Shirts." A Tecovas product title says "Western Pearl Snap."
The shopper name shows up in search. The trade name shows up in menus. What changes from one listing to the next is the cloth, the fit and the price.
Where snaps come from
Snaps on this style of shirt are credited to Jack A. Weil, with a hedge. The New York Times obituary, dated Aug 14, 2008, says he was "almost certainly the first" to put snaps on Western shirts, and it describes "metal snaps, often with mother-of-pearl covers." Rockmount's about page says the company was founded in Denver in 1946 and names sawtooth pockets and diamond snaps.
Steve Weil, in a Cowboys & Indians interview reprinted on Rockmount's site, said the first snaps in the '40s predated pearls. Real mother-of-pearl cracked in a laundering press, and by the '50s the company used synthetic inserts.

Questions people ask
What is a western shirt?
A shirt with a shaped shoulder yoke. Pointed flap pockets usually come with that cut, and the front closes with snaps or buttons. Clothing sites use the name for the pattern, not for a separate garment.
Is a cowboy shirt the same as a western shirt?
On current retail sites, yes. Cowboy shirt is the phrase shoppers type, and western shirt is the name in category titles. Wrangler says Men's Western Snap Shirts. Tecovas says Western Pearl Snap.
Why do western shirts have snaps?
Snaps break loose if the shirt catches on a horn or a branch, and nobody has to sew a button back on. The New York Times calls Jack A. Weil of Rockmount "almost certainly the first" to put snaps on Western shirts.
When did pearl snaps show up?
Steve Weil told Cowboys & Indians that the first snaps, in the '40s, predated pearls. Real mother-of-pearl cracked in a laundering press, and by the '50s Rockmount used synthetic inserts. The interview is reprinted on Rockmount's site.
How old is the western shirt?
Rockmount, founded in Denver in 1946, traces the idea to Jack A. Weil in the 1930s. Yoked western shirts were sold before 1946; snaps are the part credited to Weil.
What is the difference between a smile pocket and a sawtooth pocket?
Both are flap pockets on the chest. A sawtooth flap has a zigzag edge. A smile pocket curves. The anatomy page draws both.
