Rodeo shirts: what the name means, plus 6 shirts to consider

A rodeo shirt is a western shirt worn to compete in or watch a rodeo. Pro contestants must wear a long sleeved cut and sewn shirt in the arena under PRCA rules. In the 1930s the name meant bright satin shirts with contrast piping. Today it also covers custom logo shirts for teams and events.

How these were chosen

Every pick on this site starts from the product page: fiber, yoke, pockets, closure and the size chart. Commission plays no part in that pass. The longer version is on how we pick.

What does "rodeo shirt" mean?

It has meant a few things over the years. In the 1930s, Levi Strauss & Co. says, dude ranch guests dressed in rayon satin "rodeo shirts," and its own Western Wear line sold satin rodeo shirts "in bright hues with contrasting color piping." The FIDM Museum describes women's versions of the man's "Western or 'Rodeo' shirt" that kept the contrasting yokes and piping.

In the arena, a contestant's western shirt has to meet the dress code in the next section. Sponsors are part of the picture too. Cowboys & Indians notes that tie-down roper Tuf Cooper worked with Panhandle on his own performance wear line, and Cinch says it sponsors many rodeos.

What do pro rodeo rules require?

Long sleeves on a cut and sewn shirt. PRCA rule R11.2.1 says members in the arena "shall wear cowboy hat, a long sleeved cut and sewn shirt (no knit pullovers allowed) and cowboy boots." Bareback and bull riders may roll up the sleeve of the riding arm to the elbow, and nothing more. Breaking the dress code costs $25 per article of clothing per performance.

That rule covers PRCA members in the arena. A Cheyenne Frontier Days committee chairman told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that a ball cap with a T-shirt and shorts is fine for visitors. The rodeo outfit guide covers spectator dress in full, including hats and heat.

Are custom western shirts available for a team or event?

Some makers take group orders. Rockmount describes its white smile pocket shirt as "an excellent blank canvas to customize embroidery with logos for group orders," also available for women and youth. Rockmount asks buyers to contact it for details. That shirt carries the classic show details (piping, smile pockets and shotgun cuffs, all labeled on the anatomy page).

How were these six chosen?

Four of the six are long-sleeve shirts, the cut pro rules call for, in fabrics from cotton gabardine to stretch polyester. The Wrangler card opens the brand's whole snap shirt category, so check the sleeve on the listing. The Ariat VentTEK is short-sleeved and included for spectators in the sun. More long-sleeve options sit on best western shirts, and the brands page covers who makes what.

Questions people ask

What do rodeo contestants have to wear?

Under PRCA rule R11.2.1, members in the arena wear a cowboy hat, a long sleeved cut and sewn shirt (no knit pullovers) and cowboy boots. Bareback and bull riders may roll up the riding-arm sleeve to the elbow.

What happens if a contestant breaks the dress code?

The 2026 PRCA rule book sets a $25 fine per article of clothing per performance or section of slack.

Can rodeo shirts be custom made for a team or event?

Rockmount says its Men's Signature Solid White Western Shirt with Smile Pockets is a blank canvas for custom logo embroidery on group orders, and that it can also be customized for women and youth.

What is a satin rodeo shirt?

A 1930s style. Levi Strauss & Co. says its early Western Wear line offered satin rodeo shirts in bright hues with contrasting color piping, and that dude ranch guests dressed in rayon satin rodeo shirts.

Do spectators need a western shirt at a rodeo?

No. A Cheyenne Frontier Days committee chairman told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that a ball cap, a T-shirt and shorts are fine. The outfit guide covers what to wear in the stands.
